A powerful aviation industry was created in the USSR. The number of people employed in the aviation industry reached 1.5-2 million people, and the Ministry of Aviation Industry controlled about 250 enterprises. The brands of airplanes and helicopters, named after their creators and designers (Tupolev, Ilyushin, Yakovlev, Antonov, Mikoyan, Kamov, Gurevich, Sukhoi, Mil) were known throughout the country and by aviation experts in many countries around the world. In the post-war period, the largest number of passenger aircraft was produced in 1974 - 327 units. In the period from 1966 to 1978, the annual production of aircraft exceeded 200 units. Over the years, 3,462 passenger aircraft were produced.

The USSR produced the world's first supersonic jet passenger aircraft, the Tu-144. The production of high-capacity aircraft - “airbuses” - “Il-86” with a maximum capacity of 350 passengers was mastered.
