Free Pedro Castillo!

Free Pedro Castillo!

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention ruled that the arrest of Peru's former president lacked sufficient legal grounds. SOVINTERN demands his immediate release.

We, comrades of SOVINTERN, International Socialist Network, are deeply concerned about the situation of former President of the Republic of Peru Pedro Castillo Terrones and fully endorse the recent ruling of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, operating under the UN Human Rights Council.

Following a comprehensive review, the international body reached an unequivocal conclusion: the detention of the former head of state on December 7, 2022, lacked sufficient legal grounds and constituted an egregious violation of the fundamental guarantees of due process.

This conclusion not only corroborates our claims regarding the institutional crisis and the numerous violations that accompanied this process, but also clearly underscores the urgent need to restore the unconditional rule of law in Peru.

In accordance with the UN body's recommendations, we demand the immediate release of former President Pedro Castillo, an impartial investigation into the violations committed during his detention, and full reparations for the harm inflicted upon him. The country's judicial system must operate in strict compliance with international human rights standards.

Genuine democracy cannot thrive where arbitrary detentions and the violation of constitutional guarantees prevail. In this regard, we call upon the international community to closely monitor the implementation of these recommendations — they are crucial for preserving and strengthening democratic foundations throughout the region.

In the name of justice, the sovereignty of peoples, and the unwavering respect for human rights!
