The Third Pan-American Congress and the Farce of Salon Progressivism

The Third Pan-American Congress, held in Montevideo from August 21 to 23, 2026, laid claim to the role of a great council uniting the continent's popular and progressive forces. Yet behind the institutional splendor of the Legislative Palace and the boilerplate declarations, the gathering laid bare an unflattering reality: the deep and already insurmountable rift within the Latin American left, co-opted and tamed within the coordinates of North American progressivism.

A Cathedral Tailored to the State Department

Far from becoming a space of rupture or the elaboration of a strategy of liberation, the congress proceeded without ideological surprises or genuine tactical breakthroughs. Everything was calibrated so as not to disturb anyone. The tone and boundaries of the discussion were symbolically set by its virtual opening with a video message from Bernie Sanders, demonstrating that it is precisely this model of "leftism" — harmless progressivism preaching cosmetic reforms to guarantee the immovability of structures of power — that is tolerated, encouraged, and functional for American imperialism. Change something so that nothing changes.

The most eloquent proof of this sectarian and subordinate drift was the deliberate exclusion of governments and forces that deviated from the approved social-democratic script — such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua — as well as figures like Evo Morales and sectors of the Peruvian left; all of them were systematically subjected to veto. There is no place for anti-imperialist dissent at a forum designed for podium diplomacy.

Empty Speeches, Exclusions, and Silences

The addresses starkly reflected this crisis of substance. While figures such as former Chilean president Gabriel Boric devoted parts of their speeches to calling on the left itself to be consistent and stated unequivocally that Nicolás Maduro "stole the elections," the congress displayed rare exceptions to the rule of toothlessness. Among them, the address by the leader of Honduras's Libre party stood out, breaking the official tone of the summit by naming imperialism point by point and recalling where the region's real chains are forged.

Beyond this dissonant voice, other actors chose petty calculation. Such was the case with Argentine governor Axel Kicillof, whose appearance at the podium left a deeply bitter aftertaste. His speech, characterized by critically minded activists as provincial and devoid of any strategic international vision, skirted the central theme coursing through the popular activism of the Southern Cone: not a single word demanding freedom for Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

The Voice of the Street vs. Cloakroom Diplomacy

Faced with the lethargy of the cabinets, the truth of the grassroots fought its way through. During Kicillof's address, a delegation of young activists and influencers from La Justicia Social — including figures such as Rodrigo Fronzo, Facundo Pérez Ernst, and Javier Gómez (Javi Flama) — interrupted the protocol monotony with the cry "Freedom for Cristina!" and unfurled corresponding placards in protest against political proscription. They are all members of SOVINTER — the International Socialist Network For Socialism in the XXI Century!

This intervention was not a mere formal incident; it became a vivid confirmation that the genuine popular movement follows paths entirely different from those of this salon elite.

The Third Pan-American Congress merely confirmed the historical continental split. On one side stands corporatist progressivism, tied to the interests of the American center-left and drained of rebelliousness; on the other, a mobilized populace demanding real sovereignty, social justice, and political consistency in the face of the conservative offensive.
