GDR production

Passenger railway carriages of the "Ammendorf" firm were produced in the city of the same name in the GDR. In the USSR they first appeared in 1948. The "Ammendorfs," in particular, were part of the "Red Arrow," which connected Moscow and Leningrad. The last batch arrived already in Russia in 1996. During the period from 1948 to 1996, the Soviet Union received about 150,000 "Ammendorf" carriages from the German carriage builders.

Among other recognizable and memorable East German brands were ORWO color film (in the second half of the 1980s it held second place on the world market), the first Robotron computers, Carl Zeiss optics, Practica cameras, Helga furniture, Madonna tea and dinner sets, Piko toy model railways, Florena perfume and cosmetic products, and IFA trucks.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many iconic East German enterprises closed down - for example, in 1995 ORWO was declared bankrupt. The city of Wolfen, where the enterprise was located, is currently experiencing decline.
